New Tokaido Dogi and Hirota Belt

Recently, I upgraded my training arsenal with a new Tokaido Kata Master Japan Style dogi and a Hirota B-303 Special Black Cotton Yohachi belt. My last dogi had seen countless hours of training and served its purpose, but this one feels like stepping into another tier. From the moment I put it on, I could feel the difference: sharp lines, crisp structure, and that unmistakable Tokaido snap on every technique. It is comparable and similiar to the Hirota MH-11.

First off, this dogi doesn't just sit well it moves with you. It's firm enough to hold shape through fast kihon and kata, but soft enough to remain comfortable during longer sessions. Tokaido really nailed the balance here between tradition and modern engineering. It gives you the look and feeling of a middle/heavyweight uniform, but without dragging you down or making you feel stiff.

It's also a kata cut dogi - with the longer skirt, short sleeves and pants which really amplifies that traditional silhouette and technical sharpness. At 12oz it's a middleweight, which makes it an all-rounder for kihon, kata and kumite alike. You're getting that clean kata presentation without sacrificing movement or versatility across the rest of your training.

That said, I'm keeping an open mind. As good as this is, for a 100% cotton dogi, I can definitely see the appeal in the newer, performance-oriented materials some brands have been experimenting with for some time. For now though, the Kata Master ticks every box I mostly care about: function, feel, visually striking sharp look and that sense of purpose when you tie the obi and step onto the floor.

As for the Hirota Yohachi belt, it’s simply in a league of its own - Yohachi meaning Hirota's high quality cotton. The 4 cm width offers the perfect balance between comfort and stability. Traditionally, black belts were around 4 cm wide and thinner than many of the modern options available today. Nowadays, belts can range from commonly 3.8 to 4.5 cm in width, and even 5cm with varying levels of thickness. Personally, I prefer cotton over the distinguished "aged" and more contrasty look silk/satin belts give that many Karateka's crave, and the shinier appearance they have. The cotton material ensures that my belt will soften beautifully with time, becoming increasingly comfortable as it molds to my body. This process will make it not only more pliable but also a perfect fit for rigorous training. In my experience, it’s the best belt on the market today.

For those of you who have been following my journey, you know I’m particular about my gear. I train daily and teach regularly, so my equipment must be up to the task. This combination of the Tokaido dogi and Hirota belt not only meets but exceeds all my expectations. It’s gear that truly honors the spirit of karate while delivering modern performance.
